Sole Mates Types of Hikes

Types of Hikes
Local Hikes
Every week we offer a hike in our own back yard either in Pretoria or Johannesburg oscillating from one city to the other. In longer months with 5 Sundays, we through in one of the local favourites – Hennops or Rustig. Local hikes are on a rotation schedule and only come up every 6 months to be sure you don’t get too tired of any particular trail. Local hikes are made up of Simple Hikes only. A member is allowed to bring up to 5 guests.

Remote Hikes
Hikes in the surrounding area of Pretoria/Johannesburg and often require a bit more travel than the local hikes. Every week we organise 2 Remote Hikes. A member is allowed to bring up to 5 guests.

Limited Hikes
Popular Hikes where the number of participants is limited by the venue to less than 20. These hikes will be scheduled multiple times during the year to provide more members an opportunity to join. A member is allowed to bring 1 guest (exceptions must be approved).

Overnight Hikes
Every month we organise a longer weekend away hike that would be too far for a day hike. Overnight hikes are either Base Camp or Backpacking hikes. We strive to organise 2 Base Camp and 1 Backpacking event every quarter. Meals and Accommodation as well any Hiking Permits are pulled together to create an affordable “getaway” every month.
Overnight Hikes are very sociable events and accommodations are normally very basic Hiker’s Huts or Tents.
Participants in overnight hikes are expected to be team players and help out with setup, activities, meals, clean-up and packing up.
Overnight Hikes are limited to Members in Good Standing. The annual membership fee must be paid by all participants including guests.

Overnight Base Camp Hikes
Joint meals are organised and include Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. A member is allowed to bring up to 5 guests.

Overnight Backpacking Hikes
Joint meals are organised for dinner. Hikers are expected to provide their own breakfast and lunch for the trail. Food for the backpacking dinners is evenly distributed among all hikers. A member is allowed to bring 1 guest (exceptions must be approved).

Epic Hikes
Once or twice a year we try to organise an Epic Hike on a well known popular trail e.g. Fish River, Otter, Amatola, etc. These are often difficult to book and require advance preparation.
Epic Hikes are limited to Active Members in Good Standing that have hiked at least 1 weekend hike with Sole Mates previously and have proven to be a Team Player with regards to actively helping out on the away hikes. A member is allowed to bring 1 guest (exceptions must be approved).
